My Cinderella Story How I Went From Starting Life Living In A Camp
Trailer Parked Behind a Gas Station With My Family to Being A Success
Dentist That Made The ‘Big Boys” From The City Beg For Advice on Home to Run
Their Practices
I knew I
wanted to be a dentist since I was 5 years old. My parents taught me to do
that, I would have to work harder than everyone else. That was our family
belief. And I was willing to do it.
So all my life
I had one mission--one vision. To achieve my goal, to be a dentist. And
time as went by, I found that this country girl needs to be in a small town
so that is what I set out to do.
When I
graduated from dental school, I thought “Man, I got it made now.” I thought
I was return to my hometown and take over this existing practice, hang up my
shingle, and then the fun of life would begin as people flooded my door.
I got a wake
up call that was like a bucket of cold water in the face. I was soooo
wrong.
The practice
was surviving, but not thriving. But I didn’t panic because I went back to
the core belief that my parents told me in the beginning, just work harder.
I quickly
learned that is more of a short term survival technique than a business
model. I was burned out. Running the practice and having just a few crumbs
at the end of the month if I was lucky to show for it.
My wake up
call came when I was doing payroll on Friday and I realized my 21 year old
dental assistant that was a former waitress and I had trained in the office,
makes more money than me…
And I was the
DOCTOR!!!!
I decided that
day, I want to soar with the eagles AND I wanted to do it from the comfort
of my small town. And that is what I did!
Working hard
was out of my vocabulary and working smart was in. I studied the best
businesses, took on a new subject-direct response marketing and untapped the
potential that was ready to burst right there in my own little ‘Radiator
Springs‘, just like the town in the Disney/Pixar film “Cars”.
I know had a
plan and the resources to do it. And it was as easy as flipping a switch in
my head to make that happen.
And I saw
instant improvements. Production and collections went up. I would start my
next ideas and then it would grow even more.
Each month
built on the month before propelling me up. I was energized, I wasn’t
exhausted anymore, and I was finally living the quality life I envisioned
when I was 5 years old and made that personal commitment to dentistry.
My success
finally was cemented the day I got a call from my accountant. He had known
me since I was that 5 year old kid.
“Hey Ginger, what’s going on down there?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well I got your profit and loss from last month right here. And
you are making a lot of money. What are you doing?”
“Well, I revamped my small town practice and now it works for me
and not the other way around.”
“Wow! Hey, do you think I can do down and follow you around and
see what you are doing? I’ve got some dentist clients here in the city and
they sure could use your help.”
And that is
who it all started.
